Happy Healthy YOU in 2017! –Part Two
In our new year’s issue, I offered a checklist of 5 healthy daily practices for a healthier you in 2017. Today we continue our series of why these practices are so important. The second daily healthy practice is: adding 2 more cups of filtered water.
Try to do these 5 things everyday:
1. Add 1 more cup of veggies
2. Add 2 more glasses of filtered water
3. Say no to at least 1 processed food (bread, bagels, pizza, crackers, dessert)
4. Get outside for at least 15 mins (walk in your office parking lot or around the block)
5. Pause for at least 5 minutes of quiet and stillness (breathing, meditation, etc.)
Our body is about 70-80% water; that equals approximately 14-15 gallons! We need water to purify our system and neutralize waste products. Feeling foggy or unclear, which many people experience, has about a 95% chance of being due to lack of water in the body. So many common health challenges like headaches, fatigue, nausea and constipation are directly connected to dehydration. On a deeper level, lack of water is connected to risk of kidney issues, urinary tract infections and challenged liver function. Simply put, our body needs water to efficiently maintain so many key systems. In light of this, we can see how adding more water to our daily consumption is such an easy way to support our health.
Simply Easy Tip:
What else counts as water? Herbal tea and seltzer. Coffee and caffeinated tea are dehydrating and while they can have some health benefits, they don’t replace water.
How much WATER? An easy tip to determine how much water you need is to divide your weight by 2 equaling the number of ounces per day. (for example: if you weigh 140 lbs., you need 70 oz. of water). If you are not a water drinker-don’t get overwhelmed by that number. Start by adding more; drink 2 more glasses than you have been doing-every drop counts!
Simply Supportive: Amazing Grass Green Energy Drink
Simply Delicious: Warming Winter Tea
4 cups spring or bottled water
1/2 teaspoon dried gingerroot
2 teaspoons roasted dandelion root
1/2 teaspoon star anise
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon bark
2 teaspoons honey
Milk to taste, can use non-dairy
Nutmeg to taste
Cardamom pods (bark removed)
Slowly heat the water in a non-corrodible saucepan. Put the herbs into a mortar and crush slightly (or put them in a blender and run it briefly—just enough to release some of the aromas from the herbs). Add the herbs to the warming water. Cover the saucepan and simmer for about 10 minutes. Strain the liquid into two large mugs. Add 1 teaspoon of honey and a splash of milk to each mug. Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg, and offer a toast to a great winter!
